Get To Know Me
Hey there. I’m Chelsea a Counsellor at The Hive who has a passion for mental health and helping community member manage their chronic illness.
My Path To Counselling
I initially got an education that brought me into the health care field, through the experiences I had working in that career paired with my own health challenges, I learnt that I needed to alter my profession to align more with my personal goals.
Fast forward a few years and I am fully immersed in my passion profession-counselling. I feel privileged to used my own lived experience with mental health and chronic illness to support my clients in really unique and practical way.
My Approach To Therapy
My approach to therapy is person centered, or Rogerian therapy. I choose therapeutic modalities to suit each individual where they are at, in language which speaks to them. A few theories I apply when counselling individuals include Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Emotion Focused Therapy, and Somatic Therapy. My aim is to sync the mind, emotions, and the body into harmony with each other.
Couple's Therapy includes meeting couples one-on-one first, and then working with the couple as a team to aid communication, provide education pertaining to attachment style and love language, as well as healthy boundary setting. Gottman Theory is the foundation I use for couple's therapy.
My approach to family therapy, includes creating a safe space where everybody can feel heard and understood. I like to incorporate a talking rock to let members have their moment to speak. I like to have the group identify themes and goals to focus on, and provide individuals goals for communicating at the end of sessions. Family counseling can be a great way to bring parents and teens together, while encouraging families to adapt healthy communication habits and boundaries within their home.

I love dancing and can pull out some pretty impressive moves to just about any genre!

I live with my son and our dog Milo. You can find us soaking up quality time together whether its baking together or taking the dog for a walk.

My favorite scents include the smell of laundry drying in the summer air, or any fresh baking. I'm not so much for the florals or musks.

My Comfort food of choice depends on how sweet or salty I am feeling. I'm generally salty, favoring Hawkins Cheesies, French Fries, or African beans and rice. When I'm feeling sweet I want chocolate cake with vanilla cream cheese frosting. I have a terrible habit of midnight baking when I am stressed. (LOL)

I love the colour green. Green is a colour of growth, serenity, and many of nature’s creations, also the colour of Emerald City in Oz.

My all time biggest pet peeve is when a 'Karen or Kevin,' (if you know what I mean,) tries to make your daily challenges their nightly entertainment.

As a dancer I cannot pick only one favorite banger, but a few fave songs include: Desperado by Rhianna, Sexual Healing by Maximillion, 'Dancing in the Moonlight,' by Toploader, and 'Fight Song' by Rachel Platton. I will always dance to a golden classic such as the Beatles, and I never turn down any R&B/Hip Hop bop from the 90's-Y2K era.

One of my favorite quotes includes this line by C.S. Lewis: 'Love is something more stern and splendid than mere kindness.'
